Solar Film Cells

Cuando Me Enamoro - There has been a lot of buzz lately about solar film, also called flexible or foldable, solar panels. This is an emerging technology and could completely revolutionize renewable energy. Thin film solar most often uses CIGS (copper indium gallium (di)selenide) technology or amorphous silicon, which are much cheaper and easier to manufacture than the standard solar crystalline panels we're used to seeing. Let's break down the different advantages and disadvantages of this new and exciting technology.

Advantages:

* Cost. Flexible solar is leading the way to cheap energy from the sun. Costs for this technology are dropping quickly and with the investment in research and development, these costs will continue to fall.

* Application. The biggest advantages currently with thin film solar is its numerous application options. Unlike traditional panels, flexible panels can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces. In addition to the traditional roof mounted design, these cells are being molded to cars, backpacks, clothing, and even windows. Some companies are even integrating the cells into things like roof tiles and siding, so your house will have solar in it, not just on it.

* Technology Advancements. Many large companies such as Shell, Honda, and Nanosolar are throwing all their research muscle behind thin film solar. This means that the technology will improve greatly over time, and some of the advancements are already coming to market.

* Fewer Defects. Because the manufacturing process is simpler, there are often fewer defects. The highly technical method of building traditional solar panels, sometimes compared to computer chip manufacturing, involves a lot of detailed soldering. This has been historically a place where the traditional panels experienced a lot of warranty issues. Not so with solar film. The process is closer to printing and therefore is subject to fewer defect issues.

* Less Voltage Drop. Electricity in most applications flows better when its cool. When thin film solar cells heat up they tend to loose less voltage than traditional panels.

* Performance in Low-light. Many thin solar panels have better energy production in low-light and shading situations.

* Durability. Since the technology is fairly new, there are some questions about how long these cells will last. But many early-adopters have reported their cells lasting 15 years and more. These cells do not require the glass and aluminum casings of traditional cells because the materials within them are flexible and malleable, not brittle like crystalline silicon. This means they will likely take more abuse and last longer.

Disadvantages:

* Efficiency Questions. Efficiency of these cells has lagged anywhere from 50%-70% behind that of traditional crystalline cells. This is changing quickly however. In 2005, the National Renewable Energy Lab achieved a world record 19.9% efficiency for a CIGS cell. This means that 19.9% of the total energy that fell on the cell was converted to electricity. This is approaching the world record for a common solar panel of 24.7%.

* Space Needed. With the efficiencies currently available, you would need approximately 50% more room with thin film solar to produce the same electricity as a traditional solar setup.

* Heat Retention. Because thin film solar is usually applied directly to a surface, they can retain more hear. Traditional panels are generally installed with a standoff, meaning there is space between the panel and the supporting surface, allowing for air to cool the panels. Thin film solar may retain more heat, creating a balance act between this and its benefit of better performance at higher temperatures.

Triunfo Del Amor - Based on Mark Millar's comic book, this satire follows the exploits of hapless teen Dave (Johnson), who wants to be a superhero, despite having no superpowers at all.

Film This is not the DC or Marvel universe, this is the real world where getting shot means bloody pain and apathy rules when small-time hoods shake you down for money. So when he gets out there for the first time, he not only gets laughed at 224 la Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, but he gets the s**t kicked out of him.

Dave's painful road to hero takes an interesting turn when he starts inspiring all sorts of imitators, including a memorable screen duo in Big Daddy and Hit Girl.

Nicolas Cage inverts all his baggage (but still manages a dorky hairstyle) to be cool again, but it is Chloe Moretz as the prepubescent killing machine who really sends chills down your spine.

As the milkshake drinking Mindy she's as cute as a button, which makes her knife-wielding, gun-toting alter ego even scarier.

Once she gets going the film becomes uncom-fortable to watch not only because of the gratuitous violence but because it is a child doing it.

Mark Strong is the mob boss, Frank D'Amico, who inspires all the mayhem when he decides Kick-Ass is responsible for all his troubles. In yet another memorable performance, Strong is THE bad guy, unravelling in a coke-snorting, whiskey-swilling haze of note.

This film doesn't so much kick you in the behind as knock you out and leave you dangling from a lamppost with a sneaking suspicion that you might just have been had. The violence just looks so Tarantino-esque cool and it's even got all these smart references to how the story plays out on social networking websites.

It's clearly well made, with the computer-generated images used to enhance the movie - and not as the only reason to watch it - plus Red Mist (Mitz-Plasse) has such nifty gadgets. But, maybe Kick-Ass had it right when he (once again) gets the stuffing knocked out of him and is asked why he'd go to so much trouble for someone he doesn't know. He points at the people filming him on their cellphones from the safety of a well-lit restaurant and asks: "And three assholes, laying into one guy while everyone else watches? And you wanna know what's wrong with me?"

Totally relishing its profanity, the film is ultra-violent, vulgar and creates a new set of pulp icons. Heaven help us.

Film Di Bawah Langit

Teresa Telenovela - Penyanyi Opick sempat terganjal masalah keuangan saat menggarap film 'Asmaul Husna' bareng sutradara Hanung Bramantyo. Kini, saat menggarap 'Di Bawah Langit', pelantun 'Taqwa' itu pun menolak kehadiran investor.

 "Sebenarnya ada yang mau, tapi saya ingin biaya sendiri," ujarnya saat ditemui Studio RCTI, Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta Barat, Senin (15/3/2010).

Di film tersebut, Opick tak hanya tampil sebagai bintang utamannya. Pemilik nama asli Aunur Rofiq Lil Firdaus itu juga menjabat posisi sutradara, produser sekaligus pemilik ide cerita.

Kabarnya, untuk menggarap film yang akan rilis 18 Maret itu, Opick merogoh kocek hingga miliaran Rupiah. "Standar di atas miliar lah," ujarnya.

Opick menolak untuk menggunakan penyandang dana bukan karena trauma dengan kasus kemarin. Ia hanya ingin menjaga supaya hal tersebut tidak terulang lagi.

"Saya pikir saya cukup bisa kerjakan sendiri, untuk meminimalisir kejadian kemarin juga," jelasnya.

Yang juga turut berpengaruh ketika melakukan adegan love scene, kata Andi Soraya, adalah lawan main yang bisa memberikan kenyamanan. Ini pula yang dirasakannya ketika bermain dengan Ferly Putra di film terbarunya itu.

"Saya kenal Ferly memang saat shooting, tapi tidak kenal dekat. Kedekatan itu justru terjadi saat shooting, terbawa suasana," ucap Andi Soraya enteng.

Ini yang membuat keduanya makin lengket saja seusai terlibat shooting. Andi dan Ferly tak menampiknya. "Ke depannya melanjutkan hubungan yang baik. Dia dewasa dan punya prediksi yang tetap dalam kehidupannya," tutur Ferly.

Lantas bagaimana dengan Aya? "Terus terang aku enggak suka nyari berondong tapi kebetulan dapatnya yang lebih muda terus. Kalau aku bilang serius, enggak juga, tapi aku pilih enggak mau serius. Rasanya bagaimana gitu," ujarnya genit.

Rumah Dara Film Berkualitas

Telenovela Lola - Film Rumah Dara yang merupakan salah satu Film yang akan menjadi Film terlaruis sata ini, nampaknya mendapat respon yang cukup positif dari masyarakat luas. Directed by Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel, “Rumah Dara” (“Dara’s House”) injects fresh blood into the veins of Indonesia’s horror film industry, presenting the audience with 95 minutes of bone-chilling slashing combined with a heart-pumping manhunt.

The film cuts right to the chase. Ladya (Julie Estelle) and her crew are on their way back to Jakarta, when their car suddenly swerves to avoid hitting a seemingly lost woman. Her name is Maya (Imelda Therinne) and she tells them that she has been robbed and asks for a lift home.

Upon arriving at her house, the travelers accept Maya’s invitation to enter, and they join her mother, Dara (Shareefa Daanish), and her brothers, Adam (Arifin Putra) and Armand (Ruli Lubis), for a delicious dinner.

However, it turns out that the food has been laced with poison and the guests soon become a meal for their hosts’ twisted appetites. From this point on, it’s all blood and gore.

Slashings with knives, decapitation with a chainsaw and a stabbing with a hair pin are samples of the gore that makes up a large part of the movie. Those with a weak stomach may want to think twice before entering the cinema.

Unfortunately, the movie has been a victim of censorship, so the graphic portrayals of the slayings, which are usually an essential element in a slasher movie, have been cut. But this is not so much the filmmaker’s fault as it is the system’s.

Although the special effects are nowhere near Hollywood’s level, “Rumah Dara” still manages to wreak mind-numbing terror upon the audience.

The setting is compellingly spooky: an old Dutch colonial house set in the middle of nowhere with old-fashioned furniture, antique weapons and deer heads hanging on the walls for decor. It all screams eeriness.

Combine this with back-and-forth chase scenes, which have a degree of resemblance to the classic “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” it does a fair job in creating claustrophobic fright.

There is also a great deal of blood, and at one point, the screen is almost entirely covered in red. The movie is such a bloodbath, it wouldn’t be surprising if members of the audience left the theater with an urge to take a shower.

But the strongest, and scariest, elements of the movie come from the characterization of Dara’s disturbed family.

First, there’s the diabolical siblings. Adam is handsome, charming and well-built, but at the same time supernaturally strong and lethal. Female audiences may love him at first sight — that is, until he effortlessly breaks a bone in half.

Maya is the foxy and seductive daughter who, when angry, turns into an obsessive and psychotic girlfriend.

Bespectacled Armand, who provides the most convincing performance of the trio, is a chubby surgeon who deals with the dismembering of the victims’ bodies. He licks and gropes the female prey before dissecting them.

And then there’s the chainsaw-carrying mother, Dara. Sporting a red cardigan on top of a white dress, she has a haunting pair of eyes, a peculiar face and a chilly personality. But her most distinctive trait, one that may linger in the audience’s mind for a few days, is her disturbingly deep voice.

Shareefa’s compelling performance as Dara single-handedly turns this movie into a memorable festivity of terror, while the actors who play the roles of the children deserve recognition as their solid performances combine to make one scary family.

However, “Rumah Dara” is not without its downfalls.

The most obvious derives from a classic flaw in the identity of Indonesia’s horror film industry: The inability to avoid adding elements of slapstick comedy, exemplified by the presence of comedian Aming. It is not only unnecessary, but it ruins the movie’s integrity as a horror film.

Another flaw is that the reason behind the family’s murders is revealed quite early in the film. Their motive is rather disappointing, and the bad timing greatly reduces the sense of mystery.

Unsurprisingly, the ending sets up the opportunity for a sequel. Based on the terror that has been wrought in “Rumah Dara,” it would only be fair to offer horror buffs a second helping of gore.

Sama seperti kebanyakan sineas, Timo dan Kimo bermasalah dengan pembiayaan. Bahkan saat terbesit ide untuk mengembangkan film pendek 'Dara' menjadi feature film, mereka mengaku sedang mengalami kebangkrutan.

"Awalnya kita lagi bokek banget pas mau bikin film ini," ujar Timo saat ditemui usai press screening 'Rumah Dara' di Blitzmegaplex, Grand Indonesia, Jakarta, Senin (11/1/2009).

Meski tak punya biaya, Timo dan Kimo tidak patah arang. Hingga akhirnya, mereka pun bertemu seorang produser dari Singapura yang mau memberikan modal untuk menggarap 'Rumah Dara'.

Dengan menggaet Shareefa Daanish dan Julie Estelle sebagai bintang utamanya, Timo dan Kimo pun memulai penggarapan 'Rumah Dara' pada November 2008, dengan harapan bisa rilis Agustus 2009. Namun, saat waktunya tiba, mereka terpaksa mengubah rencana tersebut. Karena apa?

"Gue nggak mau ngeluarin 'Rumah Dara' Agustus karena ada 'Merantau' dan 'Merah Putih'," ucap Timo.

Sambil menunggu tanggal yang tepat, Timo dan Kimo pun mendaftarkan 'Rumah Dara' ke beberapa festival film di luar negeri. Alhasil, film tersebut mendapat penghargaan di Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, Korea. Tak hanya itu, sang bintang utama, Shareefa Daanish yang berperan sebagai Dara dinobatkan sebagai Aktris terbaik di ajang tersebut.

Setelah menunggu empat bulan, Timo dan Kimo akhirnya mendapat waktu yang tepat merilis 'Rumah Dara'. Film yang menampilkan beberapa adegan sadis itu bisa Anda saksikan mulai 22 Januari.

The Graduates: The Little Film That Could

Most indie films spend $95,000 before lunch on the first day. So how did director/producer Ryan Gielen squeeze an entire movie out of the tiny budget?

“We begged, borrowed and stole, literally,” says Gielen. “We didn’t actually steal, but we did get about $250,000 worth of free stuff from supporters, which is the only way we could make the film.”

The hysterical coming-of-age comedy is full of laughs and touching moments, and even won the prestigious Director Discovery Award at one of the country’s top film festivals, Rhode Island International Film Festival.

How is The Graduates faring in this tough economy?

“We’ve sold out ten festival and sneak preview screenings in a row, all by word-of-mouth,” says Gielen. “People need a laugh right now, and we’re thrilled to give it to them.”

Gielen and his brother Matthew Gielen (also a producer on The Graduates) are pioneering the way filmmakers use free social media and new media to spread the word about the film, selling out ten (10) sneak previews in a row.

“Indie filmmakers now have the ability to become small business owners,” says Gielen. “We’re not dependent on a studio to create a film or sell a film. Everyone would love that luxury, but the reality is that we must take control of our film’s fate, and free social media like Facebook and Twitter allow us to do that.”

One trick the filmmakers employ: giving away 1,000,000 free soundtracks to The Graduates, for free.

“Anyone who wants to get to know our film, or the bands involved can download our soundtrack for free, any time, anywhere,” says Gielen.

Tertarik Film Balibo Five

Namun pemutaran film ini, tidak bisa dilaksanakan , karen adanya presepsi yang berbeda mengenai Film Balibo Five yang membuat Film Balibo Five mejadi begitu terkenal seperti Film 2012 yang begitu ramai dengan penonton.

Film Balibo Five disikapi dingin Panglima Tentara Nasional Indonesia Jenderal Djoko Santoso. Dengan tawa lebar, mantan Kepala Staf Angkatan Darat ini mengaku tidak mengetahui secara rinci peristiwa yang menewaskan lima wartawan asing saat Indonesia masuk ke Timor Timur.

"Balibo Five itu sepengetahuan saya terjadi sebelum saya menjadi tentara, dan sekarang ini tahun depan saya sudah pensiun. Jadi, pengetahuan saya sedikit," ujar Panglima TNI Jenderal Djoko Santoso sebelum mengikuti Sidang Kabinet Paripurna di Kantor Presiden, Jakarta, Jumat (4/12).

Seusai melempar jawaban tersebut, Djoko langsung menuju ruang pertemuan yang terletak di lantai II Kantor Presiden, Jakarta.

Balibo adalah film kisah pertama yang pengambilan gambarnya dilakukan di Timor Leste. Film itu bertutur tentang lima wartawan, Greg Shackleton dan Tony Stewart (Australia), Brian Peters dan Malcolm Rennie (Inggris), serta Gary Cunningham (Selandia Baru), yang tewas saat pasukan Indonesia menyerbu Balibo pada Oktober 1975. Kelima wartawan itu meliput masuknya tentara Indonesia ke Timor Timur untuk jaringan televisi Australia.

Wartawan keenam, Roger East, yang datang ke Indonesia untuk menyelidiki nasib rekan-rekannya, tewas di Dili, ibu kota Timor Timur, enam pekan kemudian saat tentara Indonesia menguasai kota itu. Film Balibo menggambarkan, East dipukuli kemudian dibunuh.

Pemerintah Indonesia telah menyatakan bahwa kelima wartawan itu tewas tanpa sengaja di tengah baku tembak antara tentara dan kelompok Fretilin. Versi ini telah diterima Pemerintah Australia. Ramos Horta sendiri waktu itu adalah pemimpin Fretilin dan menjadi tokoh sentral dalam film Balibo.
